The Farm That Thinks

Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) uses sensors, cameras, artificial intelligence, and data analytics to monitor animals and barn conditions in real time. Instead of a farmer checking pens once a day, PLF means every pig is continuously observed — weight, movement, temperature, feeding behaviour, and health signals — 24 hours a day.

When combined with automated feeding systems and smart climate control, PLF dramatically improves productivity, reduces waste, and catches disease outbreaks before they spread — protecting both animal welfare and farm income.

Nthangala Technologies is bringing this technology to the Rise & Rear Project’s 7-acre farm in Lilongwe Rural — powered entirely by our proposed 2.5 kW solar array, making it completely off-grid and sustainable.

Six Systems.
One Smart Farm.

Each technology pillar works independently and together as an integrated system, feeding live data into a central dashboard accessible from any device.

📷
AI Vision Cameras
High-resolution cameras mounted in each pen continuously stream footage. AI algorithms analyse pig posture, movement, and social behaviour to detect lameness, aggression, mounting activity, and signs of illness — all without human intervention.
  • Posture & lameness detection
  • Oestrus (heat) detection for breeding
  • Aggression and stress monitoring
  • Automated body condition scoring
  • Night vision & low-light operation
02
🔌
IoT Environmental Sensors
A network of wireless sensors tracks barn temperature, humidity, CO², ammonia levels, and air quality in real time. Alerts trigger instantly if conditions fall outside safe ranges, protecting pigs from heat stress and respiratory disease.
  • Temperature & humidity per pen
  • Ammonia & CO² gas monitoring
  • Water consumption metering
  • Instant threshold alerts
  • Historical trend logging
03
🤖
Automated Feeding System
Precision feeders deliver the exact right amount of feed to each pen at optimised intervals, based on pig growth stage and current weight data. Feed conversion ratios improve dramatically, reducing waste and lowering costs.
  • Pen-level feed quantity control
  • Feed conversion ratio tracking
  • Automated feed delivery scheduling
  • Feed stock level monitoring
  • Growth-stage adjusted rations
04
🌫
Smart Climate Control
Automatically controlled ventilation fans, water misters, and heating elements respond to sensor data to maintain the optimal barn environment. In Malawi’s hot dry season, climate control is critical to pig health and feed efficiency.
  • Auto ventilation fan control
  • Water misting for heat stress
  • Seasonal climate profiles
  • Energy use optimisation
  • Remote override via mobile
05
🩹
AI Disease Detection
Machine learning models trained on pig health data flag behavioural and physiological changes that precede disease outbreaks by 24–72 hours. Early detection means early treatment — dramatically reducing mortality, vet costs, and production losses.
  • Cough & respiratory detection (audio AI)
  • Activity level anomaly alerts
  • Temperature spike correlation
  • Isolation pen recommendations
  • Outbreak pattern learning

📊
Data Analytics Dashboard
All sensor, camera, and feeding data flows into a central cloud dashboard accessible from any phone, tablet, or computer. Farm managers and Nthangala Technologies staff see the full farm picture at a glance, with trend graphs, alerts, and performance reports.
  • Live pen-by-pen overview
  • Daily, weekly & monthly reports
  • Mortality & growth analytics
  • SMS & WhatsApp alert integration
  • Export data for grant reporting

The Control Room,

Clean Energy Powers Smart Farming

The proposed 2.5 kW solar system does more than light the piggery — it powers the entire PLF infrastructure. Every camera, sensor, feeding motor, climate fan, and the central data hub runs off solar energy stored in a 200Ah battery bank.

This means our smart farm operates completely off-grid, with zero fuel costs, and can monitor and manage the pigs 24 hours a day even through the night on stored solar energy.

2.5kW
Peak solar array output — 8 roof-mounted panels on the piggery
200Ah
Battery bank — 12+ hours of PLF system operation after dark
0 MWK
Grid electricity cost — fully off-grid, no ESCOM dependency
